The Edge for Detailing the SRS: Stay on the Surface or Dig Deep?

Is it always better for a project or a development team if your documentation is as detailed as possible and contains a lot of technical information? And if you describe requirements at a high level of abstraction — is that a problem, or can it actually speed work up? 

Let’s reflect together on the question of how detailed analysts should make their specifications.  Does a “golden mean” truly exist — and if it does, should we always aim for it? What factors influence the most effective level of detail at any given moment?
